4th Orion Match: SCVRC Jrs Beat the Kealakehe AJROTC

Today, the SCVRC Juniors won our fourth regular season match of the 2017 Orion National Air Rifle League against the Kealakehe Rifle Team of Kailua-Kona from the 'Big Island' of Hawaii.  (Kealakehe Rifle Team is part of the Army JROTC program at Kealakehe High School.)

Our top four competitors this week were:  Carlos, Dylan, Sanjana and Josue.  Other athletes delivering fine performances were: Isabelluh, Kylar, Peter, Mela and Vikram. 

Our Team's season record is now 3-1.

Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club Upsets Kealakehe Rifle Team

Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club upset Kealakehe Rifle Team 862 to 848 last week in the National Air Rifle League. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club was able to win despite averaging 7 points lower than Kealakehe Rifle Team coming into this game.

Their third win in a row, Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club is in fourth place in their Division with a 3 - 1 record. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club was led by Carlos Huerta who shot a 235. The remaining contributing members were Dylan Galiotto, Josue Valverde Ortiz, and Sanjana Nandi. Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club is from San Jose, CA, and is coached by Michael Davis.

Snapping a three game win streak Kealakehe Rifle Team dropped to 3 - 1 on the season. They are currently in third place in their Division. Kealakehe Rifle Team was led by Bradley Rutherford who shot a 233. The remaining contributing members were Sean Riguis, Hanalei Akazawa, and Esaias Furtado. Kealakehe Rifle Team is from Kailua-Kona, HI, and is coached by 1SG Dave Starnes.

Next up Santa Clara Valley Rifle Club will compete against Dueling Tree Range from Canehill, AR. Dueling Tree Range currently has a 0 - 4 record. Kealakehe Rifle Team will compete against Bears Ears Sportsman Club from Craig, CO. Bears Ears Sportsman Club currently has a 2 - 2 record.

These two teams are competing in the Junior Rifle Club Distinguished Division of the Orion National Air Rifle League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week round-robin regular season going on now, where teams compete for their Division's title. Followed by the post-season, comprising of two single elimination tournaments. Only the top 16 teams across all divisions advance to the post-season, to compete for the league title.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
